What’s your learning edge?
I had a check-in with a long-ago client recently and realized that in many ways, my work today isn’t that different from when I worked with her 9 or 10 years ago. I meet with my clients, we review and update their marketing strategies and tactics, I provide recommendations and accountability, and we refine the process as the market shifts and we learn more about what works and what doesn’t.
The way to think about what we do also hasn’t changed- audiences, where they show up, what messaging resonates, what do they want, give them a wow, etc. is quite similar to marketing efforts from even before the MadMen era 😉
The options for spreading the message to your audience, however, are constantly changing. Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Clubhouse, for example. Email marketing platforms and features are constantly changing. Paid advertising options and their interfaces are always changing.
My learning edge is often just keeping up with the technological aspects of modern marketing. Sometimes, it’s going back to the more academic side of marketing and reading journal articles that might provide some insight for me and my clients. Sometimes, it’s getting better at ‘running’ my own business- Google Workspace, Quickbooks, Square, Bullet Journaling, Rocketbooks, etc.
